Ofcom is a communications regulator.They regulate the TV and radio sectors, fixed line telecoms, mobiles, postal services.They make sure that people in the UK get the best from their communications services and protect them from scams. Ofcom is funded by fees from industry for regulating broadcasting and communications networks.
There main duties are to make sure:
- The UK has a wide range of electronic communications services, such as high-speed services like broadband.
- People are protected from being treated unfairly in television and radio programmes, and stop their privacy being invaded.
- There is a high quality of television and radio programmes provided so that it would be appealing.
- People who watch TV or listen to the radio, they are protected from any harmful or offensive news.
- Radio adverts and what content appears on the television
- Any disagreements between a person and their telecom provider.
- Any complaints about the accuracy or the quality of the TV programmes.
- Premium-rates services such as mobile phone text services, ringtones etc.
