On the 23rd and 24th of November, I attended the GPU event ( Global Peace and Unity) in London's Excel. The main objective for this event is to provide a better understanding of the Muslim faith, but also it's about celebrating the diversity of world culture.

This local event is open to Muslims or non-Muslims to gather together in this peaceful event. They have live entertainment, international cuisine, Islamic exhibitions and many more. A lot of the stalls that where there was mainly charity based stalls such as Human Appeal, Orphans In Need, Muslim Aid etc. At this event, it is a huge opportunity for people to reach out to the poor by donating money, to sponsoring a child. This event has been a real eye opener for me, as everywhere you look, you see different charities all wanting to achieve one common goal...helping the poor.

Despite all that, there were a lot of competitions to enter such as winning an Ipad to winning a trip to Saudi Arabia. Without a doubt, I entered all the competitions, so hopefully I'm in with a chance of winning something. Also, there were a lot of  freebies like pens, bags, key rings, badges and these really cool long balloons which light up in one end. I could never turn down a freebie, so I grabbed as many things I could and jammed it in my goody bag.

Also, I met Uzma Yakoob who was a candidate on The Apprentice 2013. She got fired though, but she still is successful with her make-up business, which is why she was at this event to advertise her make up products and give out advices if there are people who would like to follow this particular career path.

Overall, this event was really fun and very informative.

Ofcom is a communications regulator. They regulate the TV and radio sectors, fixed line telecoms, mobiles, postal services. They make sure that people in the UK get the best from their communications services and protect them from scams. Ofcom is funded by fees from industry for regulating broadcasting and communications networks.

There main duties are to make sure:
  • The UK has a wide range of electronic communications services, such as high-speed services like broadband.
  • People are protected from being treated unfairly in television and radio programmes, and stop their privacy being invaded.
  • There is a high quality of television and radio programmes provided so that it would be appealing.
  • People who watch TV or listen to the radio, they are protected from any harmful or offensive news.
They are not responsible for controlling:
  • Radio adverts and what content appears on the television
  • Any disagreements between a person and their telecom provider.
  • Any complaints about the accuracy or the quality of the TV programmes.
  • Premium-rates services such as mobile phone text services, ringtones etc.
Recently, we took out a survey to see what people expect from a radio newscast. To get people aware of this survey, I let people know through a phone messaging app called 'Whatsapp'. This type of app was very useful as it was very quick and efficient and easy to broadcast messages to all my contacts all at once which saves a lot of time.
