News Values

  • Impact: story has significance to a community and can affect them in a bad way. E.g. Earthquake.
  • Negativity: bad news always makes the headlines. Bad news is Good news for editor.
  • Timelessness: events that happened recently or people who are current generally are more newsworthy. News that is trending. Everyone is talking about it
  • Proximity/familiarity: ‘closeness’. News that is close to you. Something that you may relate to.
  • Prominence: people in the limelight always make the news. Public eye tends to be more newsworthy.
  • Conflict: major conflicts make the news.
  • Currency: about an issue in the public because it is consciousness at the particular time.
  • Oddity: news about weird or unusual people, places, things or events.
  • Human interest: stories that play to human emotions can be very newsworthy. They are usually about ordinary people.
